While there are no small business grants available relating to insulation, the government does offer financial support, including financing schemes and tax incentives, that can help businesses lower their energy costs.

Growth Guarantee Loan Scheme

This replaced the Recovery Loan Scheme from July 2024 and supports small and medium sized businesses by providing access to finance, which could be used for investing in energy efficiency improvements, including insulation.

Structures and buildings allowance

Businesses may be able to claim the structures and buildings allowance tax relief each year.This allowance is available for qualifying expenditure on the construction of or renovation of non-residential structures and buildings at 3% per annum over 33 and one third years from the allowance period start date.

At a time when energy bills are at unprecedented highs, more and more entrepreneurs and businesses in the UK are looking for ways to make themselves more energy efficient. • Low Carbon Workspaces– provides match-funded eco grants ranging from £1,000 to £5,000 for businesses to install green initiatives such as double glazing, smart heating and more efficient lighting. It is available to SMEs based in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Milton Keynes, and Northamptonshire.
• West of England Green Business Grants– this supports SMEs in improving the energy efficiency of their buildings and general business operations. This helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will help businesses save money. You can apply for up to £15,000 per business to cover 50%-80% of the eligible costs.
• Low Carbon Lake District Grants (Cumbria)– these grants are for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Qualifying SMEs will be awarded up to 60% of the project costs, up to a maximum of £20,000.

What types of insulation can you get?

When it comes to grants for free insulation for business, the type of insulation your premises may need is dependent on the actual commercial building itself. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, external wall insulation, room in roof insulation, are just some of the options, but these may not be relevant to all business premises.

Commercial properties are rated for an Energy Performing Certificate (EPC) on a scale of A to G, with G being the lowest possible rating. Since 2018, the MEES Regulations require that any commercial properties being rented under new tenancy agreements must have an EPC rating of at least E, and this is where insulation can play a significant role.
