Save On Energy Bills
Start enjoying savings on your heating bills
Up to £40,000 in Funding Available from GOV.UK
Heating your home can be costly, especially with the escalating cost of energy being experienced by households in recent times. For many pensioners, many already on a limited income, the rising cost of living, and heating in particular, will be a real concern and could leave them with financial concerns and stress.
The cost of insulation can seem expensive, but with insulation grants for pensioners available to those in a low-income household, or claiming a qualifying benefit, big savings can be made on your energy bills. You could even end up getting your insulation fitted for free, or at least heavily discounted.
When insulation is installed – typically loft insulation, but also other types including cavity wall insulation and external wall insulation – your home will feel warmer as less heat will escape, meaning you won’t need to crank up your heating and you will experience substantial savings on your energy bills. Free insulation can not only make a key difference to your overall financial circumstances, but will also mean you are using less energy in your home, and therefore less carbon will be emitted, so your carbon footprint will be lower.
Grants for insulation for pensioners are provided under the government’s Energy Company Obligation ECO scheme which requires energy companies across the country provide free insulation grants to those who are eligible. The scheme was introduced to help low-income households improve energy efficiency and reduce energy bills. Also, it is part of the government’s aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and eventually reach net-zero carbon to tackle climate change.
How much could you save with insulation fitted in your home?
There are multiple advantages to having insulation installed in your property in terms of cost. The exact level of financial benefit you will experience can vary depending on a range of factors including the size and age of your property, the type of walls you have, the type of insulation suitable for your property, and the degree to which the property is already insulated.
Having high-quality insulation fitted has the potential to reduce your energy bills significantly. With many different options including cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, roof insulation, external wall insulation, you can improve the energy performance certificate (EPC) for your home and reduce your heating bills.
As much as £690 worth of annual energy savings could be generated for pensioners with the installation of cavity wall insulation. Likewise, the energy bill savings resulting from the installation of loft insulation could amount to as much as £590 (Savings according to the Energy Saving Trust, based on insulating previously uninsulated detached properties, and fuel prices as of October 2022).
How can you access insulation grants for pensioners?
If you or anyone in your home is receiving a qualifying benefit or your household is on a low income of below £31,000, it is likely that you will be approved for an insulation grant through the ECO4 scheme. Eligible benefits are listed below.
- Income-related Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Working Tax Credit (WTC)
- Child Tax Credits (CTC)
- Universal Credit
- Housing Benefit (now eligible under ECO4)
- Pension Credit Savings Credit (now eligible under ECO4)
If any of the above benefits are relevant to you, then you should be entitled to an insulation grant through the government-backed ECO scheme. For those who are able to get a loft insulation grant, cavity wall insulation grant, roof insulation grant or any other type of free insulation grant, you may be entitled to funding that will cover the full cost of installing your insulation, though in some instances you may need to make a contribution towards the overall cost.
In any case, as a pensioner it is still worth applying as high-quality insulation will help you improve your home’s energy efficiency, enjoy noticeable savings on your energy bills, and make a difference to your carbon emissions footprint.
Additionally, pensioners may also be able to benefit from the ECO+ scheme which will provide help for those on the lowest incomes and with the least energy efficient homes in lower council tax band.
How will pensioners benefit from ECO+?
ECO+ is an obligation for the larger energy suppliers and runs from April 2023 to March 2024. Grants for insulation will be available to low income and vulnerable households, including pensioners, and applies to those living in a property with an EPC rating of D or below, and those in properties in council tax bands A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and A-C in Wales.
The ECO+ scheme is complementary to the current Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) Scheme. ECO+ will offer insulation grants to those, including pensioner households, who haven’t previously had any Government funding to improve the efficiency of their home. With these grants, pensioners may be able to benefit from a range of home insulation options, including free loft insulation and free cavity wall insulation among others.
What type of insulation can pensioners get through the ECO4 scheme?
Free insulation grants for pensioners are available to fit cavity wall insulation, internal insulation, loft insulation, room in roof insulation, underfloor insulation, spray foam insulation and more. Pensioners who own their home or are privately renting tenants that are receiving a qualifying income-related benefit, or are in a low-income household, are eligible for a grant. As long as your home is currently occupied, and you are not currently having any renovation work done, you should be entitled to a free grant.
Insulation grants for pensioners do not have to be paid back. If you meet the terms of the ECO4 scheme criteria, a professional installer will carry out the insulation work and the grant will be claimed on your behalf to cover the cost of the installation. Even if you don’t qualify for full funding, you might still get a heavily discounted grant for your insulation, so it is always worth seeing if you could be eligible.
