party wall insulation grants

What is party wall insulation?

A ‘party wall’ is a wall that divides and leaves a gap in the wall between two adjoining homes i.e. semi-detached, or terraced properties typically built before 1990. By insulating the wall(s) between you and your neighbour(s), you could not only reduce the noise levels between homes but also have a positive impact on your heating bills. Party wall insulation can be fitted during a standard installation or added at a later date to homes that have had cavity wall insulation installed in the past.

It is estimated that more than a quarter of homes in the UK (approximately 5 million homes) could benefit from party wall insulation. If a party wall is left uninsulated it allows cold air to move up and down which leads to significant heat loss as well as noise disruption between you and your neighbour.

How can party wall insulation benefit your property?

Party wall insulation can provide homeowners with a wide range of benefits in their property and if you qualify for a party wall insulation grant you could have the cost of fitting your insulation covered, so it is definitely worth seeing if you are eligible now.

The benefits of party wall insulation include:

  • More heat retained in the home
  • Possible health benefits as a result of a warmer home
  • Reduced fuel poverty
  • Lower carbon footprint
  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) improvement
  • Savings of up to £340 per year (depending on type of property and number of part walls)
  • Less noise disturbance between neighbouring properties
  • 25 years CIGA guarantee
  • Non-intrusive method on installation, no scaffolding required
  • Environmental benefits in helping to tackle climate change
  • Funding is available so you can have the insulation installed for free or heavily discounted

Grants for party wall insulation

There are funding grants available for party wall insulation which could entitle you to free installation grants under the government’s ECO scheme. The great thing about party wall insulation grants is that they don’t need to be paid back. As long as you meet the criteria of the current ECO4 scheme, a professional installer will complete the work and the grant used to cover the cost of installation.

The ECO4 scheme places responsibility on the country’s main energy suppliers including British Gas, E. ON, Npower, Scottish Power, SSE, EDF and others to provide the grants to pay for insulation qualifying households. There have been some changes to the ECO scheme as the new ECO4 has replaced ECO3, meaning that some people who may not previously have been approved for a grant as they didn’t receive benefits could now be eligible, especially if they are a low-income household. Party wall insulation grants are also aimed at homes whose EPC puts them in bands E, F, or G.

Who can qualify for party wall insulation?

To be eligible for a party wall insulation grant you would need to have a household income of below £31,000 or receive an income-related benefit. The list of qualifying benefits has changed from ECO3 to ECO4 with some benefits no longer being part of the scheme such as disability-related benefits, there is a larger focus on income. The benefits below are the ones that are now accepted as eligible benefits in the ECO4 criteria.

  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit (new eligible benefit through ECO4)
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit (new eligible benefit through ECO4)
