British Gas customers, and even though who are not, can get access to free insulation grants if they qualify as per the eligibility criteria set out under the government’s ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) and Great British Insulation schemes. If you are eligible for funding, the work and grant funding can be arranged through an energy company like British Gas.
For households this means they could have a highly beneficial, energy efficient home improvement like insulation installed in their property without it costing them a penny. The types of free insulation measures they could receive include, loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, room in roof insulation, internal insulation, solid wall insulation and more, all of which will boost the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of their home.
The ECO4 scheme makes it possible for vulnerable and low income households to receive energy efficient home improvements grants for home energy efficiency measures which will help save them money on their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions. According to government figures, as of May 2025, the ECO scheme has assisted around 2.5 million households with funding to impact their heating bills and carbon emissions. Of the 4.2 million measures installed, 54% have been for insulation.
The aim of the fourth and last phase of the ECO scheme is to make sure that those individuals and households who need financial support and better heat retention are the first priority in the rollout of grants. If you are below the household income threshold of £31,000, or someone in your household is in receipt of one or more of the benefits below you could access free funding for insulation through British Gas.
Funding under the Great British Insulation Scheme is intended to help homeowners and tenants not currently benefiting from the ECO scheme. Around 80% of the funding is earmarked for the least energy-efficient homes (including those with EPC rating of D or below) or in low Council Tax bands (A-D in England and A-E in Scotland and Wales). The remaining 20% is aimed at supporting the most vulnerable households, including those on benefits or classed as in ‘fuel poverty’.
